This story can now be found on my portfolio website. Link

On a sunny day in Calabassas, California, Kim Kardashian West and her hubby Kanye West decided to go shopping at the Gucci store. Kanye wasn't feeling too up for it, because of his recent continuum of mental breakdowns. I mean, did you not see how fast he snatched the mike from Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards?!? Talk about HORRIFIC. Also, before his hospitalization, Kanye made a statement to the public that directly referenced slavery as a choice... To each their own opinion, but seriously Kanye? What an absolute mess.

Anyways, Kim really wanted some new merchandise. After all, she's been cashing in big with her new cosmetic line. She's also been doing a ton of Ads on Instagram! She just loves securing her bag! By bag, I mean money bags. But, Kanye had just told Kim that he did not want to shop for new clothing, because he has his own high end clothing line. Kim a thousand percent supports Kanye, but she has a hard time sticking to one brand. She loves being seen in the most controversial yet eccentric clothing, and no offense to Kanye but his line seems pretty mediocre. Like literally something you could find at any store. It's mainly composed of neon and muted colored bike shorts, sweatpants, and hoodies. It may not be my preferred cup of tea, but Kim will use any opportunity to boost her lavish lifestyle while supporting her husband.

Even though Kanye is Kim's third husband, they are definitely soulmate's. Kim worships Kanye as a musician and husband, and Kanye worships Kim as everything else! Kim definitely hit the jackpot on this one folks. Getting back to the Gucci store trip, Kim had spotted the cutest pair of limited edition sneakers for a child. That is when Kim and Kanye decided it was time to expand their empire of 4 to 5. Kourtney already had three kids, so Kim felt like it was her turn to strengthen her lineage by having a third child. Unfortunately, there was one problem. Kim and Kanye could not have children of their own anymore due to complications caused by placenta accreta, so they sought a fertility clinic. Placenta accreta is when the placenta is too rooted in the uterine wall, making it extremely unlikely to detach and remove. Kim and Kanye paid top dollar to find the perfect surrogate to carry their child. They knew this would be their safest option to continue their family growth and avoid compromising Kim and the baby's health.

Fast forward to nine long months later, and they gave birth to a sweet girl named Chicago West. Chicago has the biggest brown eyes and softest full head of dark brown hair. She was a dream for both Kim and Kanye. They were absolutely ecstatic. Kim had been through emotional turmoil knowing her risk of dying from birth complications increased after every child she conceived. So, having a healthy and happy baby was the West's main concern. Chicago grew up to take after her sassy older sister, North West. North has been turning heads in the media lately because of her interactions with the press, impeccable sense of fashion, and her very audacious attitude. That girl can serve looks! It's like she practices. She does NOT have time for any nonsense, and is already climbing the Hollywood ladder to stardom. Let's send Kim and Kanye best wishes as they raise their second daughter. It is truly a Kardashian crazed world, and we are just trying to live in it.

Author's Note: The original story I used to create my story, is based off of Part A of the Mahabharata. Specifically the story about Kunti and her son. Kunti receives a charm from a great rishi, that allows her to compel the love of a celestial being. She has a vision about the sun god Surga, and has a son with him named Karna. Karna grows to become great and influential. Kunti is embarrased about her relations, so she sends Karna down the river where he is born into the country of Anga. A woman and her husband are blessed when they retrieve Karna from the basket in the river, because they are unable to bear their own offspring. I really altered my story with the modernized plot and significance of the Kardashians in Hollywood. I kept the overall situation of the story and used Kim as having to get a surrogate to have her third child, as relevant to the blessing of Karna in a basket down the river. I gave factual commentary regarding Kim and Kanye West's life, because I wanted to emphasize the realities of the famous family. It is interesting to compare what money can do for you in Kim and Kanye's case, compared to just stumbling across a baby in a basket floating the river. I also wanted to show that humans in different lifetimes and from different backgrounds can go through the same things, but have very different solutions to work with.

  1. Wow this was very interesting to read. I was confused on what story you were basing it off of but it definitely makes sense after reading the author's note. I liked how you made it very modern and relevant. I personally do not keep up with the Kardashians and I had no idea what placenta accreta was until you explained that. It is sad that they cannot have kids of their own. Good work on the story

  2. Hey Lillian. I saw Kim Kardashian so I had to click. I thought what you wrote about was interesting, it did feel like the biography of Kim Kardashian. I too was wondering where you were getting your story from the Epics of India because it really felt like a Kardashian biography, but you surprised me and made a great comparison between the Mahabharata and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Plus, I like some of the shade you threw about Kanye West. Awesome story!

  3. Hey Lillian,

As someone who is a big Kanye fan, I absolutely loved this story! I think by making Kanye the celestial sun god is fitting with his ego. I also enjoyed how you made these celebrities who we think of as having everything be placed in character roles that really struggle in the original story, I think it made it better to imagine when picturing Kim and Kanye and Kunti and the god, and of course having Chicago be Karna. What if stormi was Duryodhana and her and Karna became jealous of North and Saint (the 2 firstborns)? Can't wait to see the rest of your stories!

  4. Hey Lillian, I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this but as soon as I saw the pic of Kim I knew I had to read your story, so kudos to the choice in picture and kudos to the style of writing. I loved what you did with this story. You changed it from a very abstract and hard to relate to story, into something we are all familiar with and feel very comfortable with. Great job. Looking forward to reading more of your stories.

  5. You know I was wondering where you would be going with the Kim and Kanye storyline. I can see where you were going with the story after reading your author's note and Karna does seem to be like Chicago when I think about it. My thought was that the whole surrogate situation could also be represented by Dhritarashtra and Pandu but their "surrogate" was Vyasa. That might be a reach but it's a reach that touches...barely.

  6. Hi Lillian,

You had me at the picture of Kim Kardashian! I love the Kardashian's so of coursed I clicked right away when I saw this post. I like your story because it has all of the real life events in Kimye's life and that made it really fun to read! One thing I want to comment on is the colors. I think the light white words not he pastel pink background makes it hard for other people to read your story. I admit it is aesthetically pleasing to look at but i think making the words darker maybe to a light gray would make it easier for readings to focus on your story. Overall great story!

  7. Hey Lillian! What a unique choice to utilize the Kardashians as characters! I definitely felt the Hollywood stardoms vibes with the references to Gucci and the description of Kim and Kanye's lavish lifestyle. Considering you based this off the story of the birth of Karna, it would be interesting to see what this child is like when they grow up; what kinds of powers might they have?

  8. Hello Lillian! I really enjoyed reading your story. It was incredibly unique and had an interesting take on the story of Kunti and the son she had with the sun god. It's always interesting to read a story that practically revamps one we read in one of the epics in this class, but embedding it into modern times adds a whole other dynamic! Great story!
