Be a Mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset:
Personally, I consider myself an emotional person. So, sometimes receiving feedback can seem a little over critical. That is why I really enjoyed reading through the various articles regarding feedback. I feel like there was something positive yet honest offered in each. However, one particular article that stood out the most to me is called Be a Mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset. The aforementioned article offered solid advice that can help the feedback you're giving, deem beneficial and positive to an individual. The main objective involves using a reflective lens to provide people with feedback, without using judgment as a means of establishing our points. I think it is important to be mindful when giving feedback because you do not want to discourage people from continuing their work. Instead, you want to offer them a perspective from a different angle so they can make adjustments constructively where they see fit. There were five specific suggestions to help build a growth perspective. Being specific, focusing on what the reader is doing, focusing on the process, making sure it can transfer, and taking yourself out of the feedback are essential components to fostering a growth mindset. I plan to try and utilize this method when providing feedback to my peers.
The Difference Between Praise and Feedback
The second article that I found very positive and informational, is The Difference Between Praise and Feedback. This article centered on the idea that we currently live in a world that offers too much praise. I can definitely agree. If we are never being criticized, we are not growing as individuals or learning anything new. I also liked how the article pointed out, that instead of praising someone for doing something, we should ask them questions and challenge their thoughts to see where they are at. It is also encouraged to not overpraise, because it could make the individual feel like they have to strive for perfection and that there is no room for mistakes. I can relate to feeling like mistakes are not an option. Growing up, my parents expected so much from me, and many times it resulted in feelings of defeat and helplessness. It is vital to have a healthy understanding of feedback because it could be a deciding factor that drastically affects your self-perception from there on out. I appreciate feedback because it allows me to work towards becoming the best version of myself possible.
