Upon learning about Carol Dweck and her stance on growth mindset, I had only ever heard of growth mindset once. I have actually never heard of Carol Dweck until today. The notion of growth mindset was introduced to me last semester in my pre-calculus/trigonometry course. My professor used it as a starter to begin the class and encouraged students to adopt it throughout their collegiate journey, in order to learn more efficiently in the course. I can attest to struggling in courses because my thinking was filled with negative perceptions referencing my lack of capability and comparison to my peers. Such thinking hindered my ability to blossom into the academic student that I hoped to become. I had to completely change the perceptions that were ruining my chances of being the best version of myself possible. It truly took patience and effort on my part to instill the confidence I currently obtain. In my case, challenging myself to develop a mantra or mindset motto proved very beneficial in my adjustments.

Additionally, I personally find Dr. Dweck's method of "yet" to be very intriguing and thought provoking. My take away from her TED Talk is that although our environments and circumstances may lead us towards a specific path, the alteration of our thinking and plan of action is what actively leads us to a more desirable course. While many of her points were logical, I feel as if there are certain areas that may not be accounted for. It could be difficult for a child from a low-income community to achieve a growth mindset, if their place of learning does not provide them with the adequate necessities needed to function on a standard level.

Furthermore, while there is a general expected rule of governance for education; the truth is the education system has consistently failed numerous families resulting in diminished quality of standard education. In order for someone to truly adopt a growth mindset, we must also take into account the various characteristics that shape their existence. Ideally, the concept of growth mindset is a great opportunity to combat stagnancy in all aspects of life. However, getting to that point requires a yearning and desire from the individual to reap significant results. One last thought I have regarding growth mindset, is establishing that there is a fixed mindset and explaining what that represents. Starting from the root of the issue could push others to gradually make changes in their lives where intended, and incorporate that intention to the rest of their pursuits. I look forward to learning more about growth mindset and its counterparts for the duration of the semester.
